IB MYP Passport (Formerly the IB Student Portfolio)
Documenting Student Learning, Reflection, and Growth Throughout the MYP
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Herbert A. Ammons Middle School is transitioning from the traditional IB Student Portfolio to the new IB MYP Passport.
The MYP Passport provides students with a more meaningful and manageable way to document their learning and growth throughout the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP).
Instead of assembling a large portfolio at the end of the school year, students complete Passport requirements throughout the year as part of their regular classes. The new format increases student ownership, strengthens reflection, and integrates the MYP more authentically into everyday classroom learning.

What Is the MYP Passport?
The MYP Passport is a record of each student's learning journey throughout the school year.
Students will:
-
Complete designated classroom assignments connected to the six IB Global Contexts.
-
Complete the required MYP Passport Student Reflection after each designated Global Context assignment.
-
Reflect on their learning, MYP concepts, ATL Skills, and IB Learner Profile attributes.
-
Receive teacher verification for completed Passport requirements.
-
Record extracurricular participation and complete the required reflection.
-
Monitor growth in ATL (Approaches to Learning) Skills.
-
Document and verify required Service & Action hours.
-
Monitor progress toward earning the required Passport points.
The Passport provides evidence of each student's academic growth, conceptual understanding, reflection, participation, service, and development as an MYP learner.
Why We Transitioned from the Portfolio to the Passport
The MYP Passport was created to:
-
Increase student responsibility and ownership of learning.
-
Make MYP expectations easier for students and families to understand.
-
Integrate MYP requirements into everyday classroom instruction.
-
Strengthen student reflection.
-
Encourage meaningful connections between classroom learning and the real world.
-
Reduce end-of-year paperwork and missing documentation.
-
Distribute MYP learning experiences across subject areas.
-
Help students and families monitor progress throughout the year.
-
Better document each student's learning journey through the MYP.
Although the format has changed, the purpose remains the same: to celebrate and document student learning, growth, reflection, accomplishments, challenges, service, and participation throughout the MYP.
How the MYP Passport Works
Step 1: Complete the Global Context Assignment
Each subject area identifies a classroom assignment connected to its assigned IB Global Context.
The assignment is completed as part of regular classroom instruction and is entered into the teacher's gradebook.
Step 2: Complete the MYP Passport Student Reflection
After completing the designated Global Context assignment, students must complete the required MYP Passport Student Reflection.
The reflection asks students to think more deeply about the learning experience and make connections to the Global Context, Key Concept, ATL Skills, IB Learner Profile, and the real world.
Important: Completing the classroom assignment alone does not complete the Passport requirement. The required Student Reflection must also be completed.
Step 3: Teacher Review
The teacher reviews the designated classroom assignment and the completed MYP Passport Student Reflection.
The Student Reflection is also a graded component and should appear in the teacher's gradebook.
Step 4: Passport Verification
After the required work has been successfully completed, the teacher verifies completion by signing the appropriate section of the student's MYP Passport.
Teacher signatures provide evidence that the corresponding Passport requirement has been completed and allow the student to earn the associated Passport points.
Step 5: Continue Throughout the Year
Students repeat this process as Passport learning experiences are completed in their different classes.
Students should complete assignments and reflections when they are assigned rather than waiting until the end of the school year.
Step 6: Earn the Required Passport Points
The MYP Passport is worth a total of 100 points.
Students must earn 70 points or higher to successfully complete the MYP Passport. A score of 69 points or below is not passing.
Because completed and verified Passport requirements contribute toward the student's total score, missing assignments, reflections, or signatures can result in lost points.
When Will Students Complete Passport Requirements?
MYP Passport requirements are completed throughout the school year as part of regular classroom instruction.
Each subject determines when its designated Global Context learning experience will occur based on its curriculum and instructional timeline.
Students should complete the required Student Reflection when directed by their teacher so that the assignment, reflection, grade, and Passport verification can all be completed while the learning experience is still fresh.
Passport Days
Herbert A. Ammons Middle School provides designated Passport Days during the school year when students have an opportunity to obtain required teacher signatures and review their progress.
Passport Days occur during two general windows:
-
December
-
March
Specific dates and directions will be provided during the school year.
FINAL DEADLINE: All MYP Passport requirements must be completed by March 31 of each school year.
Students should complete requirements as they are assigned and address missing work well before the March 31 deadline.
Where Is the MYP Passport Kept?
The official MYP Passport is maintained by the student's Homeroom Teacher, who serves as the student's Passport "Travel Agent."
Students receive access to their Passport when needed for Passport Days, Service & Action documentation, teacher verification, or other designated activities.
Students are responsible for following school and teacher directions when using the Passport and returning it to Homeroom as directed.
Digital Submission and Record Keeping
Most MYP Passport assignments and Student Reflections are completed as part of regular classroom instruction.
Teachers may require students to submit assignments digitally through Google Classroom and/or maintain copies of work in Microsoft OneDrive.
Digital records, along with teacher gradebooks, help document student completion and provide evidence if a Passport requirement later needs to be verified.
Students should maintain digital copies of Passport assignments and reflections through the end of the school year.
Families are also encouraged to periodically review grades in the school's gradebook. Required Passport assignments and Student Reflections should appear in the appropriate teacher's gradebook.

What Is a Global Context?
Global Contexts are an important part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
They help students answer an important question:
Why does what I am learning matter?
Global Contexts help students connect classroom learning to real-world issues, experiences, people, places, cultures, ideas, and perspectives.
Each subject area at Herbert A. Ammons Middle School provides students with a learning experience connected to one of the six IB Global Contexts.

To Complete Each Global Context Requirement
Students must complete both:
-
The designated classroom assignment
-
The required MYP Passport Student Reflection
The teacher reviews the required work before verifying the Passport requirement.
Each completed and verified Global Context requirement contributes points toward the student's MYP Passport score.
The MYP Passport Student Reflection
Reflection is one of the defining characteristics of an IB education.
Reflection encourages students to think about what they learned, recognize their growth, identify connections to MYP concepts and skills, and understand how classroom learning connects to the world around them.
After completing a designated Global Context assignment, students complete the MYP Passport Student Reflection provided by their teacher.
Students are expected to provide thoughtful, complete responses using specific examples from the assignment and learning experience.
The reflection asks students to consider:
-
How the assignment connects to the assigned Global Context and the real world.
-
Why the assignment is a good example of what they learned in the unit.
-
What part of the assignment they are most proud of and why.
-
Which IB Learner Profile attribute they used and how they demonstrated it.
-
How the unit's Key Concept connects to the assignment.
-
Which ATL Skill they used and how it helped them complete the assignment.
The Student Reflection is a required part of the Passport learning experience and must be completed before the teacher verifies the corresponding Passport requirement.
Additional MYP Passport Requirements
Extracurricular Activities
Participation beyond the regular classroom helps students develop interests, talents, leadership, collaboration, and connections to their school and community.
Students maintain an Extracurricular Activity Log and complete the required Extracurricular Activity Reflection.
The Individuals & Societies Department reviews and verifies the completed Extracurricular Activity Log and Reflection.
Completion of this requirement contributes points toward the student's Passport score.
ATL Skills
Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills help students become increasingly independent and successful learners.
The five ATL Skill categories are:
-
Communication
-
Social
-
Self-management
-
Research
-
Thinking
Students reflect on and monitor their ATL development throughout the year.
The student's Homeroom Teacher reviews and verifies the ATL requirement in the MYP Passport.
Completion of this requirement contributes points toward the student's Passport score.
Service & Action
Service as Action is an important part of the MYP experience and encourages students to become caring, active members of their communities.

School-Based Service
Herbert A. Ammons Middle School provides opportunities for students to participate in approved school-based Service & Action activities throughout the year.
Directions for documenting and verifying hours will be provided for each activity. Students should follow the procedures provided for that specific activity and make sure their service is recorded in the MYP Passport.
Service Outside of Herbert A. Ammons Middle School
Students may also complete approved service with a NONPROFIT organization.
Outside service must be supported by appropriate documentation from the organization showing the activity performed and the number of service hours completed.
Outside service documentation should be submitted to the IB MYP Coordinator for approval. Once approved, students should provide the appropriate evidence to their Homeroom Teacher so that the hours can be recorded and verified in the MYP Passport.
Service Verification
The student's Homeroom Teacher verifies all Service & Action hours in the MYP Passport.
Students are responsible for providing the required evidence or documentation to their Homeroom Teacher and ensuring that their service hours are properly recorded.
Students should monitor their service hours throughout the year and should not wait until the March 31 deadline to address missing hours or documentation.
Progress Monitoring
Students should review their progress throughout the school year to ensure Passport assignments, Student Reflections, Service & Action requirements, Extracurricular Activity requirements, ATL verification, and teacher signatures remain up to date.
Families are encouraged to monitor the teacher gradebook for required Passport assignments and Student Reflections.
Regular progress checks allow students to address missing requirements early and help prevent problems as the March 31 deadline approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the MYP Passport replacing the IB Portfolio?
Yes. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, the MYP Passport replaces the former IB Student Portfolio.
The purpose remains similar, but the new Passport integrates MYP learning and reflection more naturally into regular classroom instruction and gives students greater ownership of the process.
Is the MYP Passport Student Reflection required?
Yes. Students must complete the required Student Reflection after each designated Global Context assignment.
Completing the classroom assignment alone does not complete that Passport requirement.
Is the MYP Passport graded?
Yes. The MYP Passport is worth 100 points, and students must earn 70 points or higher to pass.
Individual Passport assignments and Student Reflections are also recorded in the appropriate teacher's gradebook.
What happens if a signature is missing?
A missing signature means that the corresponding Passport requirement has not been verified and the student may not receive the points associated with that requirement.
Students should address missing signatures throughout the year and during designated Passport Days.
Students do not need a perfect 100-point Passport to pass; however, they must earn at least 70 points.
When is the MYP Passport due?
All MYP Passport requirements must be completed by March 31 of each school year.
Where is the MYP Passport kept?
The official MYP Passport is maintained by the student's Homeroom Teacher and is provided to students when needed for Passport activities and verification.
Can parents review Passport progress?
Yes. Families are strongly encouraged to review Passport progress throughout the school year and monitor required assignments and reflections in the teacher gradebook.
Do students complete the Passport all at once?
No. The Passport is completed throughout the school year as students complete designated learning experiences in their different classes.
What happens if a Passport is lost or damaged?
The school can issue a replacement Passport. Teachers may use gradebook records, Google Classroom submissions, OneDrive files, and other available evidence to verify previously completed requirements.
If completion cannot be verified, the student may need to complete the missing requirement again.
Who verifies Service & Action?
The student's Homeroom Teacher verifies all Service & Action hours in the MYP Passport.
Outside service completed with a NONPROFIT organization must first be submitted to the IB MYP Coordinator for approval.
Who verifies the Extracurricular Activity Log and Reflection?
The Individuals & Societies Department reviews and verifies the Extracurricular Activity Log and Reflection.
Who verifies ATL Skills?
The student's Homeroom Teacher reviews and verifies the ATL Skills requirement.

Our Commitment
The MYP Passport celebrates each student's unique learning journey through the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
More than a collection of assignments, it provides a record of academic achievement, conceptual understanding, reflection, skill development, service, participation, and personal growth.
Through the MYP Passport, students are encouraged to become increasingly responsible for their own learning while developing the knowledge, skills, and attributes of an IB learner.
We encourage students and families to review Passport progress regularly, celebrate each milestone, and work together to ensure all requirements are completed by March 31.
